Задание 1

Перепишите следующие предложения, подчеркните в каждом из них глагол-сказуемое и определите его видовременную форму и залог. Переведите предложения на русский язык. В разделе (б) обратите внимание на особенности перевода пассивных конструкций.

Перепишите следующие предложения. Подчеркните Participle I and Participle 2 и установите функции каждого из них, т. е. укажите, является ли оно определением, обстоятельством или составной частью глагола-сказуемого; предложения переведите на русский язык.

1. The Celsius scale (шкала Цельсия) is the scale used in most scientific experiments.

Не Came Back

Alexander was a young pilot. When the war began, he was serving in the Army. He had a young wife. Mary by name. Alexander and Mary loved each other dearly and were very happy.

One day Alexander got an order to go to the front. On the day when he was leaving he said to his wife, "Wait for me, and I shall come back".

After that Mary went to work at a plant. Many weeks passed. She hadn't heard from her husband for a long time. She missed badly but she always remembered his words. At last she received a letter. It was from her husband's commander. He wrote that the Germans had killed her husband.

But the girl did not believe it. She thought, "He said he would return. I am sure he is alive". And the girl's dream came true. Alexander was not dead. One day his plane was shot down and he had to land on the enemy's territory. Soon he became a partisan. So once he knocked at the door of his flat. "You've come back. You have kept your promise", said Mary crying with joy.

Ernst Mach (l 838-1916)

Ernst Mach, an Austrian physicist was born on the 18th of February, 1838 in Turas, Monrovia. He was the son of a schoolteacher who moved with his family to Vienna while Ernst was still a baby. His training was in physics, and he obtained his doctor's degree in that subject at the University of Vienna in 1895.

However, he was strongly influenced by psycho-physics (психологическое направление в физике) and became a philosopher of science. He elaborated the notion that all knowledge was a matter of sensation. Mach's philosophy was not greeted with any enthusiasm in his time.

Mach is best known now for his experiments on airflow, in which he was the first to take note of the sudden change in the nature of the airflow over a moving object as it reaches the speed of sound. Consequently, the speed of sound in air, under given conditions of temperature is called Mach 1. Twice the speed of sound is Mach 2, and so on. After the war, planes approached the speed of sound (740 miles an hour) or Mach l. In the age of supersonic air travel, Mach numbers (a phrase first used in 1925) fill the public prints.

Ernst Mach died in Germany, on the 19th February in 1916.

A Laconic Answer

There was a time when the people of Greece were not united but instead there were several states each of which had its own ruler.

Some of the people in the southern part of the country were called Spartans and they were famous for their simple habits and their bravery. The name of their land was Laconia, so they were sometimes called Lacons.

One of the strange rules that the Spartans had was that they should speak briefly and never use more words than were needed. A short answer is often called laconic that is such an answer, as a Lacon would give.

In the Northern part of Greece there was a land called Macedonia. This land was at one time ruled by a king named Philip. Philip of Macedonia wanted to become master of all Greece. So he raised a great army and made war upon the other states, until nearly all of them were forced to call him their king. Then he sent a letter to the Spartans in Laconia and said: "If I go down into your country, I will level your great city to the ground".

In a few days an answer was brought back to him, when he opened the letter he found only one word written there. That word was “If”.

English Universitie.

All English universities except Oxford and Cambridge are fairly new. London University is the biggest of the modern English universities and has many colleges and schools.

A university usually has both faculties and departments. The faculties are arts (гуманитарный), law, medicine, science (естественный), and theology. The departments include engineering, economics, commerce, agriculture, music and technology (техника).

At the head of each faculty there is a professor. Staffs of teachers called lecturers to large numbers of students or study with small groups and here the students have a chance to discuss.

All universities admit men and women, but within some universities there are colleges especially for one sex. Most of the universities provide hostels for their students.

There are many types of colleges in England. There are colleges within universities. There are teacher's training colleges. There are also technical colleges of various types, colleges of arts and commerce. Colleges give a specialized training.

Those who wish to become teachers spend three years at a teacher's training college. They study various subjects and learn how to teach, they have practice lessons at schools.

The Blind Man and the Great Artist

Every day in one of the streets of Vienna you could see a blind man playing the violin. His dog sat near him with a cap in his mouth. People who were passing them, dropped coins into the cap.

One day, when the weather was very cold, the man was playing for a long time, but nobody wanted to give him anything. The poor man thought that he would have to go to bed without supper. He was so tired and so weak that he stopped playing.

At that moment a young man come up to him and asked him why he had stopped playing. The blind man said he had played for two hours but nobody had given him anything. "Give me your violin. I shall help you", said the man. And with these words he began to play. He played and soon there was a big crowd. Everybody was eager to listen to the fine music and to thank the young man for the pleasure.

"I don't know how to thank you", said the blind man. "Who are you?"

"I am Paganini", was the answer.
